Meet The Contestant
Lilian and Laura have known each other for about 35 years. They both went to the same grammar school in Belfast, although Laura grew up in Co. Down – she commuted to school every day (and Laura was a couple of years ahead of Lilian). Lilian has one daughter, Angela and 5 grandchildren who all live nearby.
Lillian also lived in Johannesburg for a number of years before returning to Belfast, and while in South Africa her daughter Angela considered Laura her second mum. Laura has been living in Johannesburg for 24 years. She moved there to experience a different life and enjoy better weather! Her partner Deon is a pilot with an African airline, so Laura enjoys travelling to new places with him. Laura misses a lot of things from home, but food is top of the list, so when she comes home to visit, she loves nothing better than sitting down to a home cooked dish of lamb shanks with all the trimmings!
On Tastes Like Home this week Catherine visits the Botanic Gardens in Belfast to meet Lilian Parkes, before heading to Johannesburg in South Africa to meet her best friend Laura Greer. Catherine travels through Soweto with a local guide in a Tuk Tuk & tastes “Walkie Talkies” a local delicacy of chicken beaks and feet !!. She meets a Sangoma a traditional African healer and learns about his ‘muti’ (medicine) and she learns about traditional tribal dress and customs, as well as tasting food from artisan food producers. Catherine comes face to face with a cheetah, feeds a giraffe and takes a hot air balloon ride over the ‘Cradle of Humankind’. Our dishes this week are Lamb Shanks with Bacon & Red Wine & an Amarula Pannacotta with Macadamia Praline.
