Meet the Contestants
In this episode, we are showing a reverse of an Irish person’s story living abroad. Instead, we are looking at the life of someone who’s moved away from their country and has now made Ireland their home and we learn about what their South African Tastes of Home are.
We meet Berenice Beukes who is from Cape Town, South Africa originally. She has a large family still living back home in Cape Town from her parents, sisters, brother, nieces and nephews who we meet in this episode, she is the eldest of 5 children. She misses them all dearly since she moved to Sligo a few years ago.
She lives in Sligo with her 3 children – 2 boys, and 1 daughter and has come to love Sligo and the people and she really enjoys rural living, and feels she has made a home for herself and is actively involved in her local community. She loves the ocean and mountains surrounding Sligo which reminds her of Capetown, however without the same level of sunshine. One of her favourite dishes that she misses the most from home is a Sugar Bean Curry dish, in which her Mother has a very special way of making. Berenice hopes that Catherine can replicate this dish, just as well as the way her Mother makes it and brings it home to Sligo!
In this episode, Berenice’s Mother, Lorraine teaches Catherine how to make a Sugar Bean Curry. Catherine takes her many notes on how the dish is made and travels home to Sligo and does her best to recreate and bring a little taste of home from Cape Town to Berenice.
Our Tastes Like Home episode is a little different this week as we are looking at the life of someone who’s moved away from her home in South Africa and is now living in Sligo, Catherine travels to Capetown, in South Africa to learn how to cook “Cape Malay Curries” so she can cook one for Berenice when she returns to Ireland. We visit the 5 star Delaire Graff Wine Estate in Stellenbosch which is owned by the Graff Diamond family, we take a trip to the V&A Waterfront food market & Cape Wheel, plus take a cooking class with Zainie Misbach to learn the secrets to making Cape Malay Curries. Berenice loves Ireland especially her new home in Sligo but really misses some of the curries that she grew up on in CapeTown. Food cooked in this episode a “Sugar Bean Curry” and another South African sweet treat a “Milk Tart”.
