Meet the Contestant
Mary is married to her husband Tom. She has known Tom all her life, they went to school together and they were next-door neighbours who eventually fell in love! They have 4 children 3 sons and one daughter Lisa who now lives in Vancouver, Canada.
Mary worked in the Catering business for about 23 years and she still makes the odd wedding cakes for friends! She’s also, a Volunteer with the Civil Defence Team – she helps with the Elderly. She’s always enjoyed looking after the elderly – it’s something she’s very passionate about. She looked after both her parents, who are now deceased. Today, she’s a full time carer to her Mother in law who’s 92.
Lisa has been living in Vancouver for 2 years now. She works as a Nurse and lives with her boyfriend Ian Mc Carthy, from Kinsale originally. Ian works as a Doctor and has extended Irish family out in Vancouver as well. Lisa moved to Vancouver for love! as her boyfriend Ian had already been living there, the long distance relationship became too much for Lisa so she finally packed her bags and made the big move!
She’s a big fan of GAA. She once trained with Roscommon County and also played for the local team at home. Today, she’s a member of the Vancouver Ladies GAA Team. When she first moved over, she started to meet people through her involvement in the sport.
In this episode, we travel to Roosky, Co. Roscommon to the McGowan’s farm, first we meet Lisa’s brother Ronan who gives Catherine a lift out to his mum Mary who is in the fields feeding the sheep. Mary as she tells us about how much she misses her only daughter Lisa who’s been living abroad for over two years now and how much Lisa misses home cooked foods, especially her favourite Roscommon Spring Lamb. Mary gives Catherine a tour of the farm and we meet husband Tom’s prize cattle as he loves to enter his cattle into Agricultural shows. Mary teaches Catherine her recipe for a modern twist on a family favourite Roscommon Spring Lamb Cutlets with Apricot Barbecue Glaze, Roast Vegetables with a Couscous Salad & Harissa style dressing. Mary also takes Catherine to a local graveyard where locals visit the holy well and spin the skull 3 times in the wall to be granted a wish, just to make sure she’s all set for her trip to Vancouver.
Catherine then travels to Vancouver to try and replicate this dish by trying to find the next best thing to Roscommon Spring Lamb Cutlets! And hoping to bring a taste of Roscommon to Lisa’s home.
